Famous Games of MERP Past

This Page will detail various games of MERP Past that are considered renowned.  This is done in chronological order.  As you will see many games are incomplete for now.  This will be updated as time or demand allows.  For more information on specific characters, a separate page on characters will be establish sometime during the month.  If you see any area that needs improvement, just let me know.

The First Game
  • The Very First MERP Game played by Jon/Tim/Bob/Michael/Kenji.  This featured the Son Goku peeing incident and death via Golem.  This game was based on the missions presented in the book.  Also saw some troll slaying, Death of a Beorning Ranger by shape-shifting (don't use chain mail!) and Death via Kraken via Electric Weapon.  There's no great story in this game, just that it was the first.
Okiro Chapter One
  •  Peace had returned to Middle Earth.  About five or so years had passed after the War of the Rings.  Aragorn, leader of the reunited Kingdom has had much work to do.  One of his initial orders was to form a new elite special forces unit, made of the allied clans and races, that would go throughout Middle Earth and help the people where help was needed.  The goodwill from the victories of the wars made it possible to form this unit, named after the sacred White Tree of Gondor.  Thus were the White Knights formed, to go wherever they were needed to preserve the peace of the Reunited Kingdom.
  • Characters in this game included: William Wallace (Jon), Trot Nixon (Bob), Okiro (Tim), Hauser (Michael) and Xan (Michael).
  • The first mission served as the flint and tinder for all that would come.  It came to the White Knights' notice that some trouble had been brewing in the nearby Dwarf mountains.  The group was led by the Knight Captain of the White Knights and proceeded to investigate.  The place was still filled with dwarf traps and orcs, a nasty combination.  But something just as nasty was at the end of the deep tunnels—a dragon!  Teaming up with about twenty other men, the group fought the dragon—but they couldn't get through the thick hide.  The weak spot could not be found.  Trot, the dwarf who had earlier severely injured his leg, ran in a rage as fast as his battered legs could down the long hallway where earlier the dragon had fired its hot breath.  The dwarf hurried, his team members becoming more and more wary, as they did not have a priest.  The dwarf, taking advantage of the dragon’s distraction, ran up its tail, up its back, all the way to its head, and bashed its brain in, killing the dragon in his first and only hit.  The dragon subsequently made part of the tunnel collapse, revealing an inner lair that only the team had to escape from.
  • As the group went through the secret inner lairs and tunnels, the team became separated.  Notably, the bard drank a cup of Dwarf ale and promptly KO'd for the rest of the mission.  As the group turned the corner of one passage, a beautiful fountain was seen—along with an emerald.  Hauser, the hobbit, and Okiro, the martial artist, both rushed and grabbed it at the same time.  Both, like children, demanded the item.  When both refused Hauser pointed his crossbow at Okiro and demanded it.  This turned William Wallace and Trot against him.  Hauser, panicking, shot Okiro and ran, the dwarf chasing him down.  A minute later, Hauser was killed by Trot.  Okiro, though, had the emerald.  He also took out two rings, one of fire, one of ice, giving him unique elemental attacks.  But the fountain claimed one, and would claim more.
  • While exploring the tunnels, they found a captured Wizard (Xan) being led by Orcs to their unidentified Master.  The group made it to a point where a great amount of treasure could be found at the bottom of a pit of spikes.  The pit was diagonal in basis, though steep.  William Wallace and Okiro decided to go for the treasure.  Shockingly, it was a trap, and the rope, unable to handle the stress, snapped.  Wallace, thinking quickly, grabbed Okiro from the deathtrap, pulled a knife and slowed the two down—but the walls were covered in oil, so the result was that the area was in flame.  Attempts to extinguish the fire with water failed, and only made the climbing more difficult.  There were ledges, with minor treasure, to help, but Okiro could not climb the treacherous walls.  Wallace, though, with his climbing gear, could and climbed over a hundred feet of fire, water and oil to survive.  The wizard Xan, seen looting the two men’s items, was much embarrassed.
  • After several more missions, the group proved themselves as some of the best members of the White Knights.  Which led them to being asked to do the most dangerous assignment of all: go to Moria.  The Blue Istari Pollando had been spotted allying with the remnants of Saruman’s and Sauron’s forces, and he was meeting with another evil leader;  the other blue corrupt Istari Alatar, perhaps the greatest wizard in all the lands.  Teaming up with all the White Knights, Radagast the Brown, the King himself Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas and their elite forces, the group went to stop the meeting, and perhaps defeat the wizards before they could get too strong.  A strategy was made; the group was to be part of a decoy force meant to hold off the enemy.
  • The enemy was strong—thousands of Orcs, naturally living in Moria, seeking blood.  The odds seemed insurmountable.  The bard, cursed with an evil weapon, was killed; Trot re-injured his leg, and Wallace also had to pull back.  Only Okiro and Xan were ok, and Xan was busy being annoyed at the wizards copying his Stun Cloud technique with their Death Clouds.  The odds of surviving were slim.
  • At that critical moment, Okiro’s emerald lit up—and the world stopped.  For all but Okiro.  Time had simply ceased to exist.  Okiro took his time and slew every last one of the Orcs…but at a cost.  He was absorbed into the essence of time, never to be seen again.  Okiro’s greed ultimately had killed him, even though it saved everyone else.  No one would ever see Okiro again…or so they thought.  With the orcs finished, the day was won, and the White Knights returned to glory.  The group’s three survivors, William Wallace, Trot Nixon and Xan all would be promoted.  Trot and Xan would become respected leaders of this organization, while Wallace retired to his family soon afterwards.
Okiro Chapter Two
  • Set a couple hundred years into the Fourth Age, peace and prosperity has fallen due to the reckless nature of the King's heirs.  The Outer Edges of the Realm in particular became more and more lawless.  West of the Shire, on the Coast, several factions of bandits fought for control.  The team, all types of criminals (the first "evil aligned" game), gathered together to make their own destiny.
  • The team met at an inn, which Meredor used his magical abilities to quickly take over.  The four met together at this Inn and created a new group called "The Bettys" in hopes of taking over the land.  Joining marginally under the Yellow Turbans, the group did some missions for the organization, rising in its ranks quickly, while establishing their own power.  The group even rigged an election to ensure Meredor gained power.  Eventually Meredor took over the entire organization, and sent the rest of the group to find ingredients for some rituals.  They ran into Okiro and were defeated, ending the game.
  • Characters Include: Jon's Son of a Mafia Boss Healer who was totally not evil; Bob's Dwarf, a Prince and wanted for murder of a Heir; Oriko, an evil clone of Okiro; and Meredor, an Elvish Wizard (V).
  • NOTE: This game is only likely the 2nd Chapter, aka it's Unofficial.  Also, this game is not Canon more than likely.
  • This game is most known for teaching the following reason: There's a fucking reason why there is such a thing called Resistance Rolls.  That is all.
The First Age Game
  •  Set in the First Age, where everything is more powerful, darker...and times seemed much worse than they did during the Third Age.  The group all came to a small but growing town at the intersection of the Rivers Carnen (Redwater, flowing from the Iron Hills) and Celduin (Running, flowing from the Long Lake (where Lakewood is)) which empty into the Sea of Rhun, near the homeland of the Dorwinrim.  East of Mirkwood, West of the Easterling. The town had some protection...but not enough.  The team was hired initially to investigate a nearby tower, a job done ably.
  • Proving themselves, the mayor revealed a secret of the city: Vampires were hidden in the city, turning many to the side of Morgoth.  The team did many missions to defend the city, but its ranks were being eaten away from the insides: both Iron Monkey (Tim) and Kenji became Vampires and nearly turned the Telari into one as well.  The group investigated who were behind the Vampire attacks, and found an elite cabal of wizards behind it.  They slew many of them, and one of them was renowned for turning the Shapeshifter Ma Wu against them, as a dragon.
  • Eventually, the boss behind the plot to destroy the town was found: Ungalont, Morgoth's most powerful servant.  The team broke into her fortress, and had to slay its own party members and farmers to get to her, allowing Telari to stop the ritual Ungalont was trying to complete.  Ungalont retreated and the town was saved.  It was pledged that the town, to be called Three-River, would be a bastion of Hobbits, Dwarves, Humans and Elves and would forever fight against the forces of Evil.
  • Characters Include: Jon's Telari (Elf who went from the Godlands to Middle Earth and Back Again During the First Age - think even more Noble/Arrogant than the Noldor); Bob's Franco; Tim's Iron Monkey; Michael's Ma Wu; Kenji's Bard; Dion's Leo; Ungalont; Red Shirt Ron; Red shirt Xena.

The Palantir Quest AKA Okiro Chapter Three
  • Five years after the War of the Rings, a large group is summoned to Minas Tirith by King Aragorn for a most important duty: find the other Palantirs!  The group searches throughout Middle Earth, focusing on the old cities of Gondor and Arnor left barren due to the wasteful leadership of Kings during the Second and Third Ages, in particular the libraries, searching for these powerful items.  A group of over twenty adventurers go out on this adventure...and only five survive.  Surviving battles at Osgilliath with Basilisks, bandits at the Juggler's Hall, the impenetrable fortress of Fornost, the traps of Annuminas, the siege of Tharbad and finally the duel at Mordor, the survivors came back with a Palantir.
  • Characters Include: Tim's Okiro; Michael's Jacques; Jon's Slice; Bob's Crush; Kenji's Orin; Dion's Leo; Psyla, Hauser, Shiro.
  • Refer to the soon to be published Page on the Original Palantir Quest for more information.
Okiro Chapter Four
  • Okiro is forced to gather some of the great heroes he knows (William Wallace and Trot Nixon) along with a new ally (Eru) to acquire the power necessary to fight Psyla, who has stolen the emerald of time.  Okiro needs more than that, though; to stop someone who abuses the power of time itself, Okiro goes through time to acquire the greatest Maiar (Minor Gods) of all-time (i.e. everyone in the post about Maiar) through numerous tricky dungeons.
  • After going through numerous small temples, Okiro rallies an army of demigods to fight against Psyla’s demigod evil forces from all across time. Psyla's end goal was to restore one of the great trees from before the First Age...to end the world as we know it.  A truly epic fight, with all the Maiar fighting and dying.  It would not be strange to hear of Sauron getting killed, or Tom Baldabill being slaughtered.  At the end, though, Psyla grew too strong.  The only way to prevent the end of world was to ensure that Okiro never lived so that Psyla could never find the emerald…and so Okiro went back in time (after defeating Psyla) and killed himself, thus ensuring that time was never messed up.  Of course, his mother, a Goddess, made him a God and let him live in the Undying Lands.  This allowed everyone to have a happy ending...or so they thought.
  • Characters Included: Tim's Okiro; Jon's William Wallace; Bob's Trot Nixon; Michael's Eru.
Okiro Chapter Five
  • Two Parts to this Game, currently on hiatus.
  • First Part Characters Included: Jon's Tyanith (Human Ranger), Sarah's Nafra Redleaf (Hobbit Archer) Michael's Palinril (Elvish Wizard), Vicki's Synthia (Elvish Thief), and Bob's Tyral (Dwarfish Warrior)
  • Second Part Characters Included: Jon's Tyanith, Sarah's Meoka (Half-Orc),
  • The world has forever changed.  Morgoth has corrupted Okiro, the controller of Time, and used his abilities to take over the entire world.  The Vaiar, if they still survive, are non-existent.  Evil rules over Middle Earth, save for one land kept safe by the Vaire, Godddess of Time...the land of Mordor.  A small resistance army has been formed here, but it is weak.  Hope is eternal...but it is surely nearly extinguished.  A unique part of this game was that, due to time being messed up, anyone could show up anywhere at any time from any era of Middle Earth...meaning lots of cameos by people on this page.
  • The first game began with the team being captured as slaves, and having to break out with the aid of Son Goku.  Making their way to Mt. Hope (formerly known as Mt. Doom) the group is told by Vaire that they are here to become an elite task force to recruit other heroes, chosen because they have the necessary characteristics...of being brave and weak.  The team is made to acquire jobs in the small city of Mt. Hope, living together in a cabin, working together at times, all the while doing the occasional dungeon to recruit new allies.  Eventually, Vaire revealed her plan...for the group to help raise a new Okiro, an Okiro raised in goodness that would be grown for the sole purpose of killing the Evil Okiro.  The game then became delayed due to circumstances, and new characters were chosen.
  • The 2nd game has only had a one-shot so far, and shares the same premise, world, and ideas as the above game, only with new characters, except for Jon's Tyanith, now the leader of his own group of yet more unproven but brave heroes.
The Western Front AKA Return of the Lost Gods
  • Characters Included: Michael's Kolg Solg (Orc Wizard); Sarah's Zazo (Giant Wolf/Warg); Jon's Kamil (Drake/Lizardman); Tim's Jareth (Human)
  • Set in the Seventh Age, in the lands of the Easterlings, the world has dramatically changed.  Dwarves are treated like elves but are technological wizards.  Mankind is even stronger than ever, using guns and cannons and developing engines.  The Great Eastern Lands, though, have spurned technology, and have become more magical in nature.  The East has its own balance of Orcs, Trolls, Drakes, Easterlings and others, all warily eying the West.  At this moment, a giant island appears in the Middle of the Eastern Lands, creating chaos.  The characters all meet up, each with their own agenda near a small town to acquire more power and figure out the mystery of the Island.
  • After examining some ruins, saving a castle from attack (and looting its treasures), building and ruling their own Drake City, the group receives an offer to join the Island, ruled by the Forgotten Gods of Old (Check the associated post for more information) to become their servants...and the group agrees.  After doing a couple of missions, though, Kolg Slog betrays the team, nearly getting the team killed.  The rest of the team, allying with some of the last Elves, kill the Forgotten Gods and become Gods themselves.  The team then discovers it was all a Masterful Plot by Kolg Slog, now the most powerful of all.  After a truly epic fight, the team barely manages to defeat the mighty Kolg Slog, who promises to come back and have his revenge.
Michael's Corsair/One Dwarf Ring Game
  • Characters included: Sarah's Nafra Redleaf (hobbit grandmother archer), Phil's Thorin Hammerfist (dwarf paladin/cleric?), and Joel's Azeri/Ehru (both Corsairs)
  • In which the group, after saving Osgilliath from basilisk...(ahem) were framed for murder and to escape Minas Terith and prove their innocence.  The group, featuring Joel's Corsairs and Sarah's grandmotherly hobbit Nafra in her original appearance, sailed down a great river, and arrived after some adventures to New Umbar, Capital of the Corsairs.  Proving their innocence, albeit via the loss of their leader Azeri, the group headed north to the Shire, solving the Undead/hobbit weed issues before going to the Misty Mountains to solve Dwarfish bickering.  At the Misty Mountains they found that a Wizard was trying to combine all the Dwarf Rings into a New One-Ring, and slayed a Balrog (and lost half of their team) to prevent this.
    Fellowship of the Palantir
    Hey, this better become Famous!

    Other Games
These games were done sometime during the above.  Some of these games are remembered fondly by some; others not so much.  However, the difference between the above and below is that usually specific characters and missions are not remembered by some of the group or that the games simply did not last long, either due to voting, circumstances or GM's choice.  To old players, if you don't see a game that you ran or remember  or the details are not written correctly  let us know.  If you remember something definitely let us know!  Or, if you think one of these games should be in the above section.  In Alphabetical Order in terms of Players.
    • Bob's Rolemaster Games: In which the group tried to do a different system, took way too long to make characters and then circumstances occurred to end the game prematurely.  Also, 10 stats Rolemaster....why?
    • Jon's Fifth Age Game: The group started in a small town and had to protect against a Great Evil Empire of the West, in a game where the structures of the Fourth Age had collapsed.  Known for Janus exploiting a gap in the rules and ending the game via too much power.  Also known for having Piranhas who could eat anything, including Background Point-using Items.
    • Jon's Other Fifth Age Game: In which the group were guards/mercs framed for a crime they didn't commit and had to save themselves.  Set in a land distinctly different from the Middle Earth we knew.
    • Jon's One-Shot: In which the group investigated an old temple for a nobleman and found lots of undead and conspiracy.  The group eventually stopped an undead ritual in Minas Terith, with the survivors splitting the loot and owner's house. Players might remember Sarah's dwarf with severe memory loss.
    • Kenji's Dome Game: Set in the fourth age, this involved the group going to a city to steal some precious treasure and returning to Minas Tirith...or something like that. Afterwards we were told that this was just a prologue.  We never got past it.  While flying back to Minas Tirith, we were trapped inside some invisible walls in a forest.  The place was one of the most confounding ones of all-time.  At one point we found stairs underneath the ground, and knew we were in trouble.  Turned out the group was in some type of Spider Dome, a fact never made clear to us.  After burning the dome (and maybe our characters) to the ground, the game ended.
    • Kenji's South of Haradrim Game, which took place in a Jungle Area.
    • Michael's White Knight Game: In which Jon suffered through some of his worst luck; this featured William Wallace the II getting eaten by rats, the III get killed by a Wizard and the IV via a giant pit.  There's a reason there hasn't been a William Wallace V.
    • Michael's Other Fourth Age Game: In which the Civil War over the Reunited Kingdom has led the rightful prince to a nearly early grave, leading the players to find items of power to help save the Kingdom.  Featured stereotypical Fire, Ice themed dungeons, took place in Eastern Mountains.
    • Michael's Mercernary Game: In which the players were mercenaries in a lair, and took missions for money.  Somewhat like a video game in its execution, it never went far due to disinterest.  The only real interesting thing is how often the team's tents were burned down by ambushes.
    • Michael's Artifact Game: In which the players were forced together within a limited range by a unknown presence.  Known for Jon freaking out over the Compass.  Last game until the College Break.
    • Michael's Haradrim Game: In which the group were looking for artifacts or something...the only thing I (Michael) remember is the last session in which the group was in a Desert Temple trying to gain some item but were mostly killed by a Giant Spider...except for Jon's Kuarjav, who received his Goddess's blessing via flood (in the desert) making him a legendary prophet.
    • Sarah's One-Shot: In which the group were travelers met each other in a Cave, were nearly attacked by Trolls and had to hide in a dungeon cave.  The group, accompanied by an eccentric Old Man, explored the caves, solving riddles, traps and various fights, surviving all.  Players: Steph, V, Jon, Michael.
    • Tim's First Game: Which featured mazes being drawn right before the game, bowling and Alabama Man.  Perhaps the less said, the better.
    • Tim's One-Shot: Inspired by Saw, the team was knocked out, stuck in a cave with no exits and forced to agree with the GameMaker - they had to kill each other to survive.  Bob's character won...after he killed Michael's.
    • Tim's Isolated City Game: In which the players started as kids in this deprived city and  struggled to survive.  A low-level game that took place only in one location, with a mysterious overseer.  This city was referenced in the Okiro Fifth Chapter Game.
    • Vicki's One-Shot and Okiro Chapter 4.5: Okiro and a group of "allies" had to ensure that the dungeon for Morgoth was still sealed (?)...but it turned out to be a trap.  For the purpose was not that, but to ensure that Okiro went to the Dark Side of Morgoth.  Featured the best Bard Ever, Sarah's Fell Turtle/Shape-shifter and Okiro going evil.  The events in this game led to Okiro Chapter Five.
